Bound Man Free Essays
The Bound Man by Ilse Aighinger what I discovered generally convincing in the story ââ¬Ëââ¬ËThe Bound Manââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ was that the man was not stressed over being discharged from the rope, rather he needed to be bound and with that impediment he figured out how to adjust with it and live as though he wasnââ¬â¢t bound by any stretch of the imagination. The motivation behind why I discover his circumstance and his own response to it so convincing is on the grounds that while I was perusing the story, I was placing myself in his circumstance and I would not of thought to respond in such a manner as he. To start with, where the man had awoken from his rest to find that he was bound, he discovered satisfaction in that circumstance. We will compose a custom exposition test on Bound Man or then again any comparative point just for you Request Now All through the story there were individuals who were delighted by his circumstance, yet in addition had compassion in which the bound man was totally against; he took that circumstance and caused it to appear as though it was anything but an issue, that confused me. â⬠But still I think that its all really convincing. â⬠His arms were attached to one another however not to his body, and had some free play as well. This made him grin. â⬠pg. 68-69 Even however his arms were not attached to his body, I felt myself getting awkward. To wake up limited, I would see nothing but bad in that circumstance other than as yet being alive. In addition to the fact that he was limited, he was outside and woke up to flies around him which exacerbated things. I read this story and come at the situation from his perspective; I could just negate every one of his activities. My point of view originates from me not being an outside individual at all. I originate from a family that whenever chose, we even go outdoors or to a national park, we donââ¬â¢t go in tents we lease a lodge, hold up or an inn. I wasnââ¬â¢t raised to be an outside individual or to try and like creatures, so when I consider awakening to flies and being tied up outside I consider myself going insane, shouting for help. It flabbergasted me be that as it may, to see that somebody can wake up in the position the bound man was in, without shouting out for help. It appears to be carless to me, carless about lifeâ⬠¦ But likewise so valiant and brave on the grounds that through his circumstance he fabricated quality and adjusted to being bound, something I wouldnââ¬â¢t of ever been able to do. â⬠These jokes delighted the bound man since he could have liberated himself in the event that he had needed to at whatever point he enjoyed, however maybe he needed to become familiar with a couple of new hops firstâ⬠pg 73. The bound man was entertained by the tricks the individuals in the carnival attempted so as to liberate him. There was numerous cases that the man could of liberated himself, yet he didnââ¬â¢t. He needed his body to become acclimated to these ropes and he was going to make the best out of his circumstance and gain from it. Amazingly, the bound man had ran into a wolf and had the option to secure himself, even with being restricted to development. This man was incredible. The way that he figured out how to make a move and be certain with being bound and would not free himself, picked up him a great deal of intensity. He was the casualty from the start since he was looted and bound, however he turned into the one in power by beating it, and not letting it prevent him from anything. As I would like to think, the ones who can defeat gigantic snags in life are really the ones with the most force and quality. At the point when I consider bound ââ¬Ëââ¬ËMANââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ I consider solid and daring. Men are accepted to have a great deal of pride and to not show their shortcomings; they need to be taken a gander at as prevalent, and in the story I think the bound man was unrivaled. Individuals were keen on him and his life, yet didnââ¬â¢t comprehend his purposed. I will in general acknowledge individuals who are exceptionally positive since it changes my point of view on how I carry on with my life. I frequently feel like I respond off of seemingly insignificant details, and make little circumstances greater then they are. When something turns out badly, I feel like everything isn't right and nothing can be fixed. For instance. A week ago my shoulder was separated, I felt powerless and I had 2 feet and another arm that could be utilized. With simply my one arm not having the option to work like it regularly can, I was vexed and furious and acted like the entire world was finished. I didnââ¬â¢t do anything but taking torment prescription and lay in my room. This story achieved an alternate point of view on how I responded to my shoulder. I could of been glad that at any rate my shoulder was set up back, and that it was a minor issue and would have returned to ordinary soon. Be that as it may, I am an emotional individual, and Iââ¬â¢ve never took a gander at the great side of things, which is something I wish I did. Subsequently to the man being bound he turned out to be incredible. The condition the bound man was in and the moves he made during, picked up him quality. I do accept that there is an outcome to all that you do. Regardless of whether it be positive or negative, is the manner by which you respond upon the circumstance. Toward the finish of the story when the bazaar owner concluded that telling the individuals in the town the bound man had murdered a wolf, he however that there would be a decent result out of doing that; to ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢revive the triumphs of the summerââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢. He wasn't right, his activities lead to the bound man demonstrating his boss. Furthermore, on the grounds that individuals didn't have confidence in his boss he had to substantiate himself by being in a confine with a wolf. In addition to the fact that he killed the wolf, yet he was not, at this point one with his rope. The owners spouse didn't trust in the bound keeps an eye on power, so she cut him liberated from his rope while he was in the enclosure. The outcome of her activities lead to there being no reason for slaughtering the wolf, the man was presently unbound and he not, at this point had a reason. So he shot the wolf. Without his bound the man felt powerless, and blood raced to his feet. Her activities not just lead to the passing of the wolf, yet soon to the demise of the man himself. â⬠The way that the bound man saw his circumstance had an outcome also. It picked up him force, and he figured out how to do new thing with only a little measure of development, and with that I felt the story was convincing. Perusing this story changed my entire viewpoint on how I respond to specific things. It made me believe that it would be such a great amount of simpler over the long haul in the event that you simply observe the splendid side of awful situationsâ⬠¦ But additionally, to not have so much pride that you believe you should substantiate yourself to other people, since that itself, can prompt awful outcomes. Iambic Pentameter Verses in Plays Like Julius Caesar
There are many types of rhythmic patterns in poetry, but the one you have likely heard of most is iambic pentameter. Shakespeare is famous for writing in iambic pentameter, and you can find it in multiple forms in every one of his plays. He often used the popular rhymed iambic pentameter, but not always. In Macbeth, for example, Shakespeare employed unrhymed iambic pentameter (also known as blank verse) for noble characters. Understanding and identifying iambic pentameter is key to appreciating Shakespeares plays, so lets take a look. Understanding Iambic Pentameter The term iambic pentameterâ⬠can sound intimidating at first. However, its simply a way of speaking thatà Shakespeareââ¬â¢s contemporary audience would have been accustomed to. In regards to how the Bard used this type of meter, there are only five key things to know: Iambic pentameter is a verse rhythm often used in Shakespeareââ¬â¢s writing. It has 10 syllables per line.Syllables alternate between unstressed and stressed beats, creating this pattern: ââ¬Å"de/DUM de/DUM de/DUM de/DUM de/DUM.â⬠Shakespeare did sometimes play around with this structure to create different effects. For example, he changed the stress pattern and added syllables to create variation and emphasis.Generally speaking, high-class characters speak in iambic pentameter and lower-class characters speak in prose. The Origins of Iambic Pentameter Iambic pentameter was born out of a need to create a meter for the English language in the 16th century. At that point, Latin was seen as superior and the language of true literature, while English was for common folk. Poets developed iambic pentameter as a way of enhancing English to make it worthy of literature and poetry as well. Whether rhymed or in blank verse, the patterns effect allows poetry to be full of movement, imagery, and a musical quality. In contemporary poetry, iambic pentameter is considered somewhat of a lost art; however, some use the pattern or similar meters as a technique to bring their work to life. Examples of Iambic Pentameter in Shakespeares Plays Examples of iambic pentameter are found in all of Shakespeares plays, including the famousà Romeo and Juliet, Julius Caesar, A Midsummer Nights Dream, and Hamlet. See instances of this meter in the verses that follow. From Romeo and Juliet: Two households, both alike in dignity(In fair Verona, where we lay our scene),From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean. From forth the fatal loins of these two foesA pair of star-crossed lovers take their life.(Prologue) But soft, what light through yonder window breaks? It is the East, and Juliet is the sun.Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon,Who is already sick and pale with griefThat thou, her maid, art far more fair than she.Be not her maid since she is envious; Her vestal livery is but sick and green,And none but fools do wear it. Cast it off.(Act 2, Scene 2) From Julius Caesar: Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears.(Act 3, Scene 2) From A Midsummer Nights Dream: And I do love thee. Therefore go with me.Ill give thee fairies to attend on thee,And they shall fetch thee jewels from the deepAnd sing while thou on pressed flowers dost sleep.(Act 3, Scene 1) From Richard III: Now is the winter of our discontentMade glorious summer by this sun of York,And all the clouds that loured upon our houseIn the deep bosom of the ocean buried.(Act 1, Scene 1) From Macbeth: Henceforth be earls, the first that ever ScotlandIn such an honor named. Whats more to do,Which would be planted newly with the time,As calling home our exiled friends abroadThat fled the snares of watchful tyranny,Producing forth the cruel ministersOf this dead butcher and his fiend-like queen(Who, as tis thought, by self and violent hands,Took off her life)ââ¬âthis, and what needful elseThat calls upon us, by the grace of grace,We will perform in measure, time, and place. So thanks to all at once and to each one,Whom we invite to see us crowned at Scone.(Act 5, Scene 8) From Hamlet: O, that this too, too sullied flesh would melt,Thaw, and resolve itself into a dew,Or that the Everlasting had not fixedHis canon ââ¬â¢gainst (self-slaughter!) O God, God.(Act 1, Scene 2) From Twelfth Night: If music be the food of love, play on.Give me excess of it, that, surfeiting,The appetite may sicken and so die. That strain again! It had a dying fall.O, it came oer my ear like the sweet soundThat breathes upon a bank of violets,Stealing and giving odor! Enough; no more.Tis not so sweet now as it was before.O spirit of love, how quick and fresh art thou,That, notwithstanding thy capacityReceiveth as the sea, naught enters there,Of what validity and pitch soeer,But falls into abatement and low priceEven in a minute. So full of shapes is fancyThat it alone is high fantastical.(Act 1, Scene 1)

Iron Crowned Chapter 13 Free Essays
The journey back was uneventful, the most notable thing being the afterglow that now burned between Kiyo and me ââ¬â something I now questioned the wisdom of. My words had been true: Iââ¬â¢d never stopped caring about him. But heââ¬â¢d been right too: what had happened between us back in the glade had come from my own outrage and need to get back at Dorian. We will write a custom essay sample on Iron Crowned Chapter 13 or any similar topic only for you Order Now That wasnââ¬â¢t really a good reason to start a relationship. It wasnââ¬â¢t even a really good reason for casual sex, and honestly, I wasnââ¬â¢t sure what my status was with Kiyo at the moment. Deanna reappeared and followed along so quietly and obediently that I finally broke the silence to reassure her Iââ¬â¢d keep my part of the bargain. Her drab face lit up, and I had to give her credit for not pushing the matter until I settled my other business. Kiyo and I went straight to Dorianââ¬â¢s, once weââ¬â¢d crossed back into more familiar territory. My plan was to deal with him first and then jump to the human world. I thought it would be safer to have the crown there. Dorianââ¬â¢s guards met me with pleased grins, and while they were surprised to see Kiyo, most seemed to know Iââ¬â¢d been off on some secret mission. Coming back alive was a good sign. As soon as we entered the castle, I ordered a messenger to go to Katrice and inform her that I now possessed the Iron Crown and that if she wanted to talk surrender, I was all ears. As Dorianââ¬â¢s consort, I had the power to order around his staff ââ¬â but I had a feeling that would end soon. Kiyo and I were admitted into Dorianââ¬â¢s exalted presence out in a courtyard, where he was making a long-tormented courtier named Muran play the harp. I knew for a fact that Muran had had exactly one lesson, and Dorian seemed quite amused watching the guy struggle through. This kind of thing was one of Dorianââ¬â¢s greatest pastimes, and usually, even though I felt bad for Muran, it provided me with a little amusement. Today I felt none. When we entered the courtyard, Dorian took one look at our faces and promptly ordered everyone away ââ¬â even his guards. He still wore that small, carefree smile, but Iââ¬â¢d seen a subtle shift in the lines of his face. He knew something was up. His astuteness was what made him such a good ruler. ââ¬Å"Well, here you are,â⬠he said, sitting back in the gentry equivalent of a lawn chair. Except, of course, Iââ¬â¢d never seen Home Depot sell anything so ornate and gilded. Normally when I arrived, Dorian kissed me, but his wariness must have held him back. ââ¬Å"As beautiful as ever, my dear, if a little beat up around the edges. I suppose this means you either succeeded or just barely escaped with your life?â⬠ââ¬Å"We succeeded,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve got the crown.â⬠Again ââ¬â that smile didnââ¬â¢t change, but an eager light flickered in Dorianââ¬â¢s eyes. He leaned forward. ââ¬Å"I knew it. I knew you could do it.â⬠He studied me up and down, his gaze finally resting on the bag over my shoulder. ââ¬Å"May I see it?â⬠ââ¬Å"No,â⬠I said bluntly. ââ¬Å"No oneââ¬â¢s going to see it. Itââ¬â¢s going to be hidden away where it canââ¬â¢t be used to start eating up peopleââ¬â¢s lands.â⬠Dorianââ¬â¢s eyebrows rose, and he began to speak. I could already imagine a hundred variations of what was going to come out of his mouth, something along the lines of, ââ¬Å"Whatever are you talking about, my dear?â⬠I stepped forward, my control snapping as I cut him off. ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t start! Donââ¬â¢t even start with some sugar-coated denial. Youââ¬â¢ve known all along what the crown could do! You knew itââ¬â¢d scare Katrice because it meant I ââ¬â and by default you ââ¬â could take over her kingdom!â⬠Dorian hesitated, and again, I could guess at the thoughts spinning in his head. Denial or backpedaling? He finally went with the latter. ââ¬Å"And what better way to push her into peace?â⬠he said at last. ââ¬Å"The point of a war like this is to eventually march over and subdue someone anyway. Isnââ¬â¢t it much simpler and faster to achieve that same end through another way?â⬠ââ¬Å"A way that rips her land from her!â⬠I exclaimed. ââ¬Å"And sticks me with another fucking kingdom!â⬠I stepped forward and had to forcibly keep myself from getting closer. I was so, so angry. So angry that this man I cared about could do this to me. I was almost angrier at him than Katrice at the moment. From her, at least, I expected betrayal. ââ¬Å"And thatââ¬â¢s what you would have wanted to do ââ¬â not just scare her. You would have found some way, some justification for taking that drastic step, just like you got me to go after this in the first place.â⬠Much of the humor had faded from Dorianââ¬â¢s face now. ââ¬Å"And would you have gone after it if youââ¬â¢d known?â⬠ââ¬Å"No.â⬠He shrugged. ââ¬Å"Well, there you have it.â⬠I was aghast. ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s it? How the hell can you be so lax about this? How can you act like itââ¬â¢s okay to have tricked me from the beginning ââ¬â you and that hag? How can you claim to love me and lie to me?â⬠ââ¬Å"I do love you,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"More than you know. I did this for your own good.â⬠ââ¬Å"You did it for your own good,â⬠I snapped. ââ¬Å"I canââ¬â¢t believe I fell for it again. Youââ¬â¢ve done this before, and now Iââ¬â¢m done. Done with you. Done with all of this. I donââ¬â¢t need your help anymore. Iââ¬â¢ll finish this fucking war on my own.â⬠ââ¬Å"Eugenie,â⬠warned Kiyo softly. He didnââ¬â¢t contradict me, not in front of Dorian, but I understood the subtext. It was the point heââ¬â¢d made before: not to spurn Dorianââ¬â¢s military help. Dorian scoffed, sharing that sentiment. ââ¬Å"Of course you need me. If you can get past your hurt pride, youââ¬â¢ll see that weââ¬â¢re in this together. Use the crown however you want, but be reasonable so that the two of us can finally end this war.â⬠My voice was low and dangerous when I spoke. I was furious that he could be so condescending, that he assumed he could just smooth this all over. ââ¬Å"There is no more us.â⬠ââ¬Å"Now youââ¬â¢re just overreacting,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"We need to finish this war together, and we need to be together, period. Weââ¬â¢re meant to be.â⬠ââ¬Å"No,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢re done. Itââ¬â¢s over.â⬠I could see from his face that he didnââ¬â¢t take that seriously either. He didnââ¬â¢t get it. His ego wouldnââ¬â¢t allow him to. Before he could respond, Kiyo lightly touched my arm. ââ¬Å"Be careful. Look what youââ¬â¢re doing.â⬠I glanced around. The wind was rising and falling, making the apple trees sway back and forth. Dark clouds began to gather above. It wasnââ¬â¢t uncommon for my emotions to unconsciously affect the weather, but the fact that I could do it in a land under someone elseââ¬â¢s control was a sign of how much my power had grown. If Dorian had wanted sunny weather, it should have stayed that way. The realization of what I could do was heady. Nonetheless, I pushed back, calming the air and dissipating the storm clouds. But Dorian wasnââ¬â¢t concerned about any of that. His attention had snapped to one small gesture: Kiyoââ¬â¢s touch on my arm. Iââ¬â¢m not sure how Dorian knew ââ¬â maybe just the way Kiyo and I stood near each other ââ¬â but in that moment, Dorian realized what had happened between Kiyo and me. And that, more than any of the arguments here, was what finally broke that laid-back attitude. His face turned to stone. ââ¬Å"Oh,â⬠he said to Kiyo, voice completely devoid of emotion. ââ¬Å"I see. Itââ¬â¢s your turn again.â⬠Outrage filled me at the insinuation that I could be passed around ââ¬â a sentiment not unlike what Kiyo himself had expressed. Dorian allowed me no chance to counter. ââ¬Å"Well, if thatââ¬â¢s how itââ¬â¢s going to be, then thatââ¬â¢s how itââ¬â¢s going to be. You may be right that thereââ¬â¢s no us, but we are still in this war together. My armies are too enmeshed, and I can hardly let Katrice think Iââ¬â¢m backing down. Dareth!â⬠Dorianââ¬â¢s voice rang out, loudly enough that one of the guards behind the glass doors heard. He swiftly opened the doors and stepped outside. ââ¬Å"Your Majesty?â⬠ââ¬Å"Please escort the Thorn Queen and her pet from the premises. They are denied hospitality. Do not admit them again. Should any of her household come, they may be allowed into my presence.â⬠His eyes flicked to me. ââ¬Å"Send Rurik as your proxy for all military matters. He was doing all the work anyway.â⬠Dorianââ¬â¢s attention went back to his guard. ââ¬Å"You have your orders.â⬠Dareth had trouble keeping the shock off his face. I had become a fixture around here, treated nearly the same as Dorian. After a few moments, Dareth composed his features, his loyalty to his king overriding any disbelief he might feel. He turned to me, expression formal. He gestured inside. ââ¬Å"Your Majesty.â⬠The respect was there, but the message was clear. I was being thrown out and could see Dareth practically praying I wouldnââ¬â¢t resist. I didnââ¬â¢t, and while a dozen parting retorts to Dorian filled my head, I shoved them aside. He thrived on that kind of attention. It would only make him feel more important, and I wanted it made clear that I really was done with him ââ¬â even though the cold reality of what was happening made my heart break. Kiyo and I began to follow Dareth without comment, but then I paused. Reaching toward my neck, I ripped off the necklace I wore, the one with Dorianââ¬â¢s ring. I tossed it at his feet, meeting his gaze with a message I hoped he understood. He did. His answered mine with green fury. ââ¬Å"I said get out of here.â⬠I turned away, letting Dareth take us to the castleââ¬â¢s front doors. As soon as we were outside, I heard him giving instructions about the revoking of our hospitality. I imagined the other guards shared his shock, but I walked on without looking back. Once Kiyo and I had traveled far enough that the land shifted and put us in Maiwennââ¬â¢s kingdom, he turned to look at me. ââ¬Å"Are you okay?â⬠he asked, worry in those dark eyes. ââ¬Å"Fine,â⬠I said flatly. I was confident my anger was justified â⬠¦ but leaving Dorian still hurt. Heââ¬â¢d dismissed me so easily, once heââ¬â¢d realized Iââ¬â¢d slept with Kiyo. Iââ¬â¢d expected something â⬠¦ something more emotional, I guess. Some sign that Iââ¬â¢d meant more to him than a useful consort. I should have known better. ââ¬Å"Letââ¬â¢s go back to Tucson.â⬠Iââ¬â¢d kept Volusian and Deanna away while weââ¬â¢d met with Dorian but brought them both back now. I told Deanna to come to my home tomorrow and that weââ¬â¢d start working on her problem then. To Volusian, I gave orders to return to the Thorn Land. He would tell Rurik to go to Dorian and then wait until word came back from Katrice. I had no doubt that word of my being banned from Dorianââ¬â¢s would spread around quickly enough; I didnââ¬â¢t want to see the reactions of my people when that happened. Kiyo and I crossed back to Arizona at a nearby gateway, going to his place instead of mine so that he could redo my stitches. He was as good as any ââ¬Ërealââ¬â¢ doctor, and I didnââ¬â¢t want to have to explain my new cuts and bruises to someone else. A slew of cats and dogs greeted me when I entered his apartment, making me feel oddly nostalgic. ââ¬Å"Are you sure youââ¬â¢re okay?â⬠Kiyo asked later. I was lying stomach-down on his bed while his needle went to work on the cut. My cheek rested on a pillow, my only view being his dresser as I tried to stay still. ââ¬Å"Fine.â⬠ââ¬Å"You keep saying that, but what went down was pretty serious.â⬠I could imagine the frown on his face. ââ¬Å"I didnââ¬â¢t expect him to pull hospitality.â⬠ââ¬Å"He knows we slept together,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"Guys get upset when their girlfriends do that.â⬠Iââ¬â¢d broken up with Dorian in my head the instant I found out about the deception, but as far as he was concerned, Iââ¬â¢d cheated on him. Maybe I had. But betraying someone whoââ¬â¢d deceived you didnââ¬â¢t seem like that much of a betrayal. ââ¬Å"Yes,â⬠said Kiyo. ââ¬Å"Yes, they do.â⬠He tied off his thread and re-bandaged it all. ââ¬Å"Please, please do not pull these out again. The fact that this isnââ¬â¢t infected is a miracle.â⬠ââ¬Å"I wonââ¬â¢t,â⬠I said, sitting up and carefully putting my shirt back on. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t plan on getting in any fights for a while. Iââ¬â¢m staying out of the Otherworld until they really need me, and investigating Deannaââ¬â¢s murder should only involve questions. Actually, Iââ¬â¢m hoping to pass it off on someone else.â⬠ââ¬Å"She wonââ¬â¢t like that,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢ll get it done,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"And sheââ¬â¢ll like that. Probably even faster than if I did it.â⬠I started to stand, but Kiyo caught hold of my hand and kept me down. His expression turned sly. ââ¬Å"You want to stay for a while?â⬠I shook my head, smiling faintly. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve got some things to do. Besides, just because we did what we did doesnââ¬â¢t mean â⬠¦ well, it doesnââ¬â¢t mean things are the same again.â⬠His mischievous smile faded. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re right. A lot kind of got rushed. I suppose we should â⬠¦ I donââ¬â¢t know. Do you want to go on a date?â⬠ââ¬Å"A date?â⬠I laughed in spite of myself. It seemed so out of place after what weââ¬â¢d been through these last few days. Too ordinary. ââ¬Å"Dinner and a movie?â⬠ââ¬Å"Something like that. I could pick you up later, after your errands are done. Or tomorrow if you need a little more time.â⬠A little more time? Maybe I needed a lot more time. I really didnââ¬â¢t know. I might have jumped into bed ââ¬â figuratively speaking ââ¬â right after my relationship with Dorian had crumbled, but as Iââ¬â¢d said, that didnââ¬â¢t mean I was ready to establish something committed with Kiyo again. Iââ¬â¢d had sex with Kiyo in the throes of my anger; I had more to think about now that Iââ¬â¢d cooled down ââ¬â and seen Dorianââ¬â¢s face. My head told me we were through, but my heart already missed him. ââ¬Å"Tomorrow,â⬠I said. Kiyo nodded. ââ¬Å"Fair enough. I should probably check in at the clinic anyway.â⬠I honestly didnââ¬â¢t understand the terms of Kiyoââ¬â¢s employment. With his constant visits to the Otherworld, he didnââ¬â¢t seem to have any regular schedule with the emergency vet clinic he worked at. He just seemed to show up whenever he wanted. It was more convenient than my own job for maintaining a dual existence between worlds. Confused feelings or not, I let him kiss me good-bye before I left. There was a part of me that wished I could just stay with him, hiding out in his bed and avoiding the rest of the world. Worlds, even. But I had too much to do. The first thing was to get home and change into clean clothes. I arrived to what initially appeared to be an empty house, but the cars in the driveway tipped me off. Sure enough, a minute or so after I walked inside, I heard Timââ¬â¢s bedroom door open. He emerged, wearing only jeans, his black hair standing in all directions. ââ¬Å"Hey, Eug. Didnââ¬â¢t expect to see you back.â⬠ââ¬Å"Apparently not. I take it Laraââ¬â¢s in there?â⬠He had the grace to look sheepish. ââ¬Å"Ah, well ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Hi, Eugenie.â⬠Lara appeared in the kitchen beside him, her hair as messed up as his. Her clothes ââ¬â including Timââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"West Coast Powwow 2002â⬠T-shirt ââ¬â showed signs of hasty assembly. She was blushing, but her embarrassment turned to surprise as she eyed my appearance. She still wasnââ¬â¢t used to seeing me in real life. ââ¬Å"Rough day?â⬠ââ¬Å"Days,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"Oh â⬠¦ I donââ¬â¢t suppose â⬠¦ I donââ¬â¢t suppose youââ¬â¢d be interested in hearing about some job offers?â⬠It was the first time sheââ¬â¢d been hesitant to bring up work. I think she was finally starting to understand the grueling nature of my life and that back-to-back jobs werenââ¬â¢t as easy as checking items off a list. ââ¬Å"Not really. Not for a few days.â⬠ââ¬Å"A few ââ¬â â⬠She bit off her protest and meekly nodded. I walked around them, heading for my room. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve got things to do,â⬠I called back to them. ââ¬Å"So you can go back to â⬠¦ whatever it is you were doing.â⬠Truthfully, I didnââ¬â¢t want to do the task hanging before me. I wanted to find whatever baked goods Tim had squirreled away in the kitchen and then take that nap Iââ¬â¢d longed for at Kiyoââ¬â¢s. But, no. Iââ¬â¢d made a promise to Deanna, one I had to honor, no matter how messed up the rest of my life was. So, after cleaning up and changing, I sat on the edge of my bed and picked up my cell phone. I stared at it for a long time, running my fingers along its edges as I procrastinated. Finally, I dialed a memorized number and waited. There was a good chance that no one would answer. I was calling my momââ¬â¢s cell phone, though, which gave me better odds than if Iââ¬â¢d called her house number. I knew Roland had asked her to keep her distance from me, but after seeing me at the hospital, my mom would likely resist any directives like that ââ¬â if only out of fear that Iââ¬â¢d lost a limb or something. ââ¬Å"Hello?â⬠My breath caught, and I almost couldnââ¬â¢t speak. Just that one word â⬠¦ the sound of her voice. It sent a flood of emotions through me, and I forced myself to remember my mission here. ââ¬Å"Mom?â⬠ââ¬Å"Genie? Are you okay?â⬠she asked promptly. As suspected, she feared limb loss. ââ¬Å"Yeah, yeah, fine. How are you?â⬠ââ¬Å"Fine. Worried about you ââ¬â like always.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m okay,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"Really. But I need â⬠¦ I, um, need to talk to Roland.â⬠Long silence. ââ¬Å"Eugenie ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"I know, I know. But I need his help with something. It wonââ¬â¢t take long. Just one question. Please.â⬠She sighed. ââ¬Å"Oh, baby. I wish I could, but heââ¬â¢s made it clear â⬠¦ You know how he feels about everythingâ⬠¦.â⬠ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s a human thing,â⬠I said, only partially lying. ââ¬Å"A job in this world. Please, Mom. Just ask him if heââ¬â¢ll talk to me for a minute?â⬠More silence, then another sigh. ââ¬Å"Hang on.â⬠I waited, nervously twisting the fabric of my bedââ¬â¢s duvet. What would happen? The two most likely options were that either my mom would relay his refusal or they would simply hang up on me. But, no. It was Rolandââ¬â¢s voice I heard next. ââ¬Å"Yes?â⬠Cold. Wary. After everything that had just happened to me in the Otherworld, hearing his voice nearly broke me. I wanted to sob and beg him to forgive me. Beg him to love me again. My mom had undoubtedly done a fair share of that already, though. Sheââ¬â¢d clearly had no luck. I had no reason to believe Iââ¬â¢d fare any better, so I made my tone match his as I swallowed back tears. Just business here. ââ¬Å"I need a referral,â⬠I said brusquely. ââ¬Å"To a private investigator. One who isnââ¬â¢t going to be freaked out by the stuff we deal with. I figured you must know someone.â⬠ââ¬Å"You need a P.I. to deal with some monster?â⬠he asked harshly. ââ¬Å"No, no. It actually should be pretty mundane ââ¬â all human stuff. But considering what we do â⬠¦ Well, I thought I should have someone prepared in case things get weird.â⬠I didnââ¬â¢t have any reason for Deanna to interact directly with a P.I. ââ¬â or for me even to mention her ââ¬â but I wanted to be safe. ââ¬Å"Well,â⬠said Roland. ââ¬Å"Letââ¬â¢s make it clear: ââ¬Ëweââ¬â¢ donââ¬â¢t do the same kinds of things.â⬠With great effort, I bit off the retorts that wanted to burst out of me. I wanted to explain for the hundredth time that Iââ¬â¢d never expected ââ¬â or wanted ââ¬â to reach this level of involvement in the Otherworld. Again, I opted for directness. ââ¬Å"Please, Roland,â⬠I said simply. ââ¬Å"This is for a human family. Just forget about me for a minute.â⬠When he didnââ¬â¢t respond, I thought for sure the anticipated hang-up would come. ââ¬Å"Enrique Valdez,â⬠he said at last. ââ¬Å"You should be able to look up his number. Iââ¬â¢ll call too and give him a heads-up.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh, Roland. Thank you so ââ¬â ââ¬Å" Click. There it was. I pulled the phone away and held it in front of me again, staring at it as though it were to blame for all my problems. A few moments later, I tossed it on the floor. Anger surged through me, quickly fading into sadness. My eyes fell on my travel pack in the corner, the pack containing the Iron Crown. That ââ¬â and all it represented ââ¬â was the source of my problems. I fell back onto my bed, staring up at the glow-in-the-dark stars stuck on my ceiling. Roland, Dorian â⬠¦ I was losing the men in my life. Why, why had Dorian done that? Why had he let me fall in love with him, only to play me? Was that what love meant to him? Was that how all his relationships worked? Heââ¬â¢d hurt me, hurt me so terribly, and the petty, dark voice that lived inside me said that if sleeping with Kiyo had hurt Dorian in return, it was no more than he deserved. Kiyo. Kiyo was all I had left now, and I didnââ¬â¢t know if I could trust him either. Before I could ruminate very much on that particular woe, a cold presence filled the room. I sat up quickly, putting aside all my self-pity as Volusian materialized before me. ââ¬Å"Mistress,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"Volusian,â⬠I replied. ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s going on?â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve come with a message, as you requested.â⬠As always, his words were emotionless, yet he somehow conveyed the feeling that he resented every one of them. ââ¬Å"Queen Katrice has responded to your news of the Iron Crown.â⬠That was fast, even for the Otherworld. ââ¬Å"And?â⬠ââ¬Å"And, she has agreed to a temporary truce.â⬠I shot up from the bed. ââ¬Å"You have got to be kidding.â⬠Volusian didnââ¬â¢t respond. Iââ¬â¢d long since learned that any comment I made about him joking or kidding was treated rhetorically. Volusian did not joke or kid. ââ¬Å"It worked,â⬠I murmured, more to myself than him. ââ¬Å"I canââ¬â¢t believe it. Dorian was right.â⬠ââ¬Å"Indeed. But I assume my mistress will not resume carnal relations with him.â⬠I made a face. If there was anyone I hated discussing my sex life with more than Jasmine, it was Volusian. ââ¬Å"No. It doesnââ¬â¢t matter if he was right. He lied to me to make it happen. He should have told me the whole story. He used half-truth means to achieve his ends.â⬠Volusian nodded solemnly. ââ¬Å"I told you that long ago, that the Oak Kingââ¬â¢s own agenda will always come first. As will the kitsuneââ¬â¢s. But, unsurprisingly, my mistress chooses to ignore the only sound advice given to her and instead listens to those who use affection for their own purposes.â⬠The word ââ¬Ëaffectionââ¬â¢ was spoken with particular venom. ââ¬Å"Kiyo and Dorian donââ¬â¢t ââ¬â Look. Stay out of this, okay? I never asked for your ââ¬Ësoundââ¬â¢ advice. Get back to Katrice. How does this truce work exactly?â⬠ââ¬Å"Hostilities will cease until all parties are able to discuss the current situation. How said discussion proceeds will be settled beforehand by messengers. You and the Oak King may meet with her directly, or you may have representatives do the negotiating.â⬠I tried to picture myself in a room with Dorian and Katrice. Lovely. ââ¬Å"And where would this happen? Iââ¬â¢m sure as hell not going to the Rowan Land.â⬠ââ¬Å"That too will be negotiated during this truce,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"A neutral kingdom is the most likely choice. Shaya would like to discuss that with you at your earliest convenience.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m sure she would. Go back and tell her I trust her to set up whatever arrangements need to be made. If I have to go myself â⬠¦ well, then I go. Iââ¬â¢ll check in with her soon, but come back if anything happens in the meantime.â⬠Volusian waited, and I gestured him away. ââ¬Å"Go.â⬠He vanished, and I sank onto my bed. My eyes fell on the concealed Iron Crown once again, and I dared to wonder if maybe some good had come out of this whole mess. How to cite Iron Crowned Chapter 13, Essay examples

Proposition 227: The Crisis Of Democracy And The Indoctrination Of Our Children Proposition 227: The Crisis of Democracy And the Indoctrination Of our Children By H. Michael Moya English 2 Professor Deena Hutchinson November 29th, 1999 Literacy for cultural reproduction uses institutional mechanisms to undermine independent thought, a prerequisite for the Orwellian manufacture of consent or engineering of consent. In this light, schools are seen as the ideological institutions designed to prevent the so-called crisis of democracy, another Orwellian concept, meaning the beginnings of democracy....... In fact, this very perspective on schools was proposed by the Trilateral Commission. This commission was created in response to the general democratic participation of masses of people in the Western world in questioning their governments ethical behavior. Its major purpose, as many understand it, was to seek ways to maintain the Western capitalists cultural hegemony. The Trilateral Commission referred to schools as institutions responsible for the indoctrination of the young. Noam Chomsky stated it simply: The Trilateral Commission argued that schools should be institutions for indoctrination, for imposing obedience, fo r blocking the possibility of independent thought, and they play an institutional role in a system of control and coercion. -Donaldo Macedo Literacies of Power The vulnerability of democratic government in the United States (thus) comes not primarily from external threats, though such threats are real, nor from internal subversion from the left or the right, although both possibilities could exist, but rather from the internal dynamics of democracy itself in a highly educated, mobilized, and participant society. -The Crisis of Democracy: Report on the Governability Of Democracies to the Trilateral Commission English Only. Official English. Americanism. Bilingual Education. These issues have emerged in the political and social arena to insight debate on the national, regional and local levels. Given the vast spectrum of differing viewpoints and opinions, it is no wonder that bilingual education has turned into such a heated battle. The struggle rages not only in the education debate, but in the areas of social welfare, civil rights and racial discrimination, intellectual arenas, and the politics of immigration. Generally speaking, until the early 1980's, America has taken English as the official language of the Union for granted. Noone ever questioned the use of English as the common denominator among our melting pot society. Therefore no additional legislation was ever lrequired to protect the English language from being undermined in some way. However, recently there have been drastic demographic changes taking place in various regions of the country. Immigration of linguistic minorities in large numbers has moved in like a wind current onto the bilingual education fire. Although this is not unusual, considering that immigrants from all over the world have been pouring into the nation for centuries, what is now making their presence such a huge concern is that they are requiring social services on a large scale in their native language. Government agencies are being pressured into providing these various services in languages other than the generally accepted English language. In 1974 the Supreme Court upheld an Office of Civil Rights regulation which interpreted the 1964 Civil rights Act to apply to persons with a language deficiency when protecting against prejudice based on national origin. This ruling was universally used as the basis for implementing bilingual education programs throughout the country. These are the roots of the current English Only movement in response to the spread of bilingual education. The debate started officially in 1981, Senator S.I. Hayakawa lobbied Congress to make English the Official language of the Union by amending the Constitution. As we all well know, amending the Constitution is no small task. The bill proposed to make official what was already obviously taken for granted. Hayakawa did not stop there. He included in his bill provisions that would prohibit federal and state laws, ordinances, regulations, orders, programs, and policies from requiring the use of other languages. The bill not only attempted to make Englis h official, but it also attempted to ban any other language. This went counter to campaigns started during the 1960's to accommodate the needs of linguistic minorities. Since the introduction of Hayakawa's Official English bill in 1981, a political movement has grown around the issue which has polarized people from all over the nation. Supporters quickly point out that English has always
